I am in New Orleans attending the SeaWeb Seafood Summit, an international conference focused on sustainability issues. It’s a bit of a homecoming for me. I was born and raised here. It has been several years since I’ve been back, and it will be interesting to see how much has changed.

This will be particularly true when I take a field trip on Feb. 12 out to the Barataria Basin in the Mississippi River delta, to see how much has changed along the Louisiana coast since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and Hurricane Katrina. It’s been more than 15 years since my dad and I went fishing in the bayous off the Intercoastal Waterway. I’m sure much has changed.

The SeaWeb Seafood Summit is an annual international event that brings together representatives from the seafood industry with a broad range of scientists and policy makers. The aim is to discuss current seafood systems and collectively work toward more sustainable goals.

I will be attending a variety of sessions ranging from international approaches to sustainability to ocean acidification and eco-labeling. I’ll be blogging about the highlights and occasionally taking appropriate photos.

My goal is to share highlights of new thinking, new technologies and new developments to promote the long-range health of our seafood resources.
